You can sign up on the M-Pesa Business Hub by clicking the sign-up button and enter your first/last name, email address and phone number. You will then receive a successful registration link with further instructions on how to change password and login.

You can log in to the M-Pesa Business Hub using your email and password and your registered business administrator or Finance contact. Future updates will include mobile app access.

No. Existing M-PESA Business Portal (MBP) users and other Safaricom merchant service users will be migrated automatically. You will just need to verify and update your details upon first login.

M-PESA Business Till is an enhanced Lipa Na M-PESA Buy Goods Till that allows business owners not only to receive payments, but also use collected funds directly to run their business.

With a Business Till, you can:

  • Pay to a mobile number
  • Pay another Buy Goods Till
  • Pay a Paybill (utilities)
  • Withdraw funds to the owner nominated number
  • Withdraw funds at an M-PESA Agent
  • Withdraw funds to the bank
  • Sell airtime and earn 5% commission

Only the original applicant can view the status.

Application Status Meanings:
  • Pending: The application request has been submitted successfully to the Lipa Na M-PESA team for processing.
  • Rejected: The application request has been rejected and the reason(s) is clearly indicated.
  • Approved: All documentation provided has been reviewed successfully and the business till is being processed.
  • Complete: The M-PESA Business Till number is active, details are sent to the applicant, and payments can now be received.

  • Head Office Number: Manages multiple stores under one business.
  • Store Number: Used to operate a specific store.
  • Till Number: Displayed to customers for payments.

The Till SIM card is only for receiving payment notifications and cannot be used to transact.

Ways to get or replace a Till SIM:
  • Safaricom Shop/Care Desk: Carry your Till/Store number and identification (National ID or Passport).
  • Self-service SIM swap (KES 50) via *234# and Account Services > SIM Swap.
  • Email support at M-PESABusiness@safaricom.co.ke with Till/Store number and SIM serial number.

Note: You cannot replace another person Till SIM.

Option 1: Via USSD (Nominated Number)
  • Dial *234*2# from the nominated number and enter store number.
  • Accept terms and conditions.
  • Business owner receives operator ID and start key.
  • Dial *234*2# again, go to Account Services and select Change PIN.
  • Use start key as old PIN and create a new PIN.
Option 2: Via M-PESA Business App

  • Select Sign In, continue under terms, enter Till number/shortcode, select Activate under Operator ID, enter start key, set new PIN, then validate with ID/passport.
  • After success, you receive an SMS confirming operator activation.

You can withdraw to owner, withdraw from agent, withdraw to bank, pay Business Till, pay Paybill, pay mobile number, sell airtime, and check balance through *234# from the nominated number.

Follow this menu path: M-PESA Business Till, enter Head Office/Store Number, then choose Withdraw Funds, Make Payments, Sell Airtime, or Account Services based on transaction type.

Each transaction requires operator ID and PIN, and you receive screen and SMS confirmations after successful initiation/completion.

  • Per transaction: KES 150,000
  • Daily limit: KES 300,000

  • Pay Buy Goods Till: 0.25% (max KES 200, charged to recipient)
  • Pay Mobile Number: Standard M-PESA charges
  • Pay Paybill: Standard Paybill charges
  • Agent Withdrawal: Standard agent charges
  • Sell Airtime: 5% commission earned

This is a self-service, on-demand email statement service available for daily, monthly, and yearly periods.

Statements are also accessible via the Business App.

Dial *234# from nominated number, select M-PESA Business Till, enter Head Office/Store number, then select M-PESA Statements and choose Register for email statements.

Accept terms, enter and confirm email address, then enter operator ID and PIN.

OTP verification can be done on USSD (Verify email using OTP) or via email validation flow. You receive SMS confirmation after successful registration.

You can request 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, or custom period statements. Statements are sent to your email.

For statements older than 6 months, visit a Safaricom shop with ID or email M-PESABusiness@Safaricom.co.ke.

Use *234#, select M-PESA Business Till, then M-PESA Statements, choose Full Statements and period, then enter operator ID and PIN to submit.

Additional options available under statements include Change Email, Resend OTP, Cancel Registration, and Opt Out.

Only the Primary Operator can create an assistant.

  • Dial *234# > M-PESA Business Till > enter Head Office/Store number.
  • Select Account Services > Create Assistant.
  • Enter assistant mobile number, operator ID, and PIN, then confirm.
  • Assistant receives operator ID and one-time start PIN and must change PIN before transacting.

Change PIN:
  • Dial *234# > M-PESA Business Till > enter store number > Account Services > Change PIN.
  • Enter operator ID, then start key (old PIN), then set and confirm new PIN.
  • Confirm request and receive SMS confirmation.
Reset Assistant PIN:
  • Dial *234# > M-PESA Business Till > enter store number > Account Services > Reset Operator PIN.
  • Enter assistant operator ID, your operator ID, and your PIN, then confirm reset.
  • Assistant receives new start key via SMS and changes PIN using normal change PIN flow.

Paybill is a cash collection service that allows an organization to collect money on a regular basis from customers through M-PESA.

Payments are customer-initiated, and the receiving organization may use a unique identifier such as an account number to identify the payer.

The customer enters the organization business number (Paybill number) when making payment.

  • Paybill is a long-term product used over several years by businesses, institutions, and government entities. A valid registration document or license is required.
  • Short-Term Paybill is designed for up to 6 months for a specific project, after which it is closed.
  • Short-Term Paybill may support personal projects without a business registration license, but official project authenticity documents are required.

Submit your application and required documentation on https://hub.m-pesaforbusiness.co.ke/. Processing is done within 24 hours after successful submission.

This is the Paybill number used by customers to make payments through Lipa Na M-PESA.

No. Only the business owner, merchant, or aggregator can apply for a Paybill number.

The applicant is the person filling in the application form and submitting required documents on the portal.

Using the nominated mobile number captured on the application form, dial *234*4# and follow the prompts.

You may also manage your account on the M-PESA Business Hub: https://hub.m-pesaforbusiness.co.ke/. Login credentials are sent to the administrator email during account creation.

This is a USSD code used by the nominated Paybill owner number to withdraw funds to bank and check Paybill balance.

  • Dial *234*4# from the nominated mobile number.
  • Select My Account Services.
  • Select Check Balance.
  • Select Business/Store number and enter the Paybill number.
  • A message is sent showing the current Paybill balance.

  • Dial *234*4# from the nominated mobile number.
  • Select Withdraw Cash.
  • Select To the Bank and enter the Paybill number.

Note: You can only withdraw funds to the bank account provided during the application process.

This is the ability to receive funds in the bank immediately after initiating a withdrawal request.

A Short-Term Paybill is a product that enables the raising of funds for different needs e.g., medical bills, funerals, weddings, education, and for charity/catastrophe, etc. It is designed to be used for a short period to serve a specific goal.

When applying for the short-term Paybill, each type of Paybill has specific documents required as will be shown on the portal, i.e. medical Paybill will require different documents than a wedding Paybill.

Yes, one can apply on behalf of a beneficiary, minor, or a group.

The applicant is the person filling in the application form details and submitting the required documents on the online portal.

A beneficiary is the recipient or the person in need of the funds collected on the short-term Paybill.

Log in to the portal – and click on “my applications” tab. Only the applicant can view the status of the application.

A Short-Term Paybill is valid for a maximum duration of 6 months.

You can withdraw funds as well as make payments to another Paybill, Till, or mobile number.

Therefore, instead of withdrawing funds, you can pay bills directly from your Paybill.

The nominated number transacts using the following flow:

  • Opt in via USSD: Dial *234#, select Merchant Services, enter Paybill Number, select Yes to activate, and accept Terms and Conditions.
  • After opting in, the nominated number receives an SMS with Operator ID and Start PIN.
  • Change PIN: Dial *234#, select Merchant Services, enter Head Office/Paybill Number, select Account Services, then Change PIN.
  • Enter Operator ID, then enter the Start PIN as old PIN.
  • Enter New PIN and confirm New PIN.
  • Make payments: Dial *234#, select Merchant Services, enter Head Office/Paybill Number, then select Make Payments.
  • Choose Paybill, Till, or Mobile Number.
  • Enter Operator ID, PIN, and amount to complete the transaction.

  • Dial *234# from the nominated mobile number provided during application.
  • Select My Account Services.
  • Select Check Balance.
  • Select Business/Store Number and enter the Paybill number.
  • A message will be sent showing the current Paybill balance.

This is a USSD code used to withdraw funds to the bank and check the balance on the Paybill.

  • Dial *234# from the nominated mobile number provided during application.
  • Select Withdraw Cash.
  • Select Bank and then enter the Paybill number.

Note: You can only withdraw funds to the bank account provided during the application process.

This is the ability to receive funds in the bank immediately after initiating a withdrawal request.

Kindly send an email to M-PESABusiness@safaricom.co.ke stating your short-term Paybill number and the statement period required.

A Short-Term Paybill is valid for up to 6 months, after which it is closed and cannot receive funds. Ensure you withdraw funds before expiry.

Kindly send an email to M-PESABusiness@safaricom.co.ke and include the Paybill number, requested extension duration, and supporting documents (for example, an updated hospital letter signed by a doctor within 30 days validity).

The Business One Account service enables organizations to use one Lipa na M-PESA shortcode to collect and disburse funds.

Organizations with Paybill, B2C, or both can be onboarded on One Account. For new customers, both products are added during onboarding.

  • Access both Paybill and B2C services from a single shortcode.
  • Use funds on the Paybill account as float for B2C disbursements without a B2B transfer or bank float deposit.
  • Get instant B2C float availability, unlike bank float deposits that can take up to three days for cheque deposits.
  • View all Paybill and B2C reports on a single statement.

  • Banks, MFIs, and SACCOs: loan disbursements and repayments, and deposits from bank account directly to M-PESA account.
  • Insurance: policy payment collection and claims settlement.
  • Salary disbursements and repayment collections for companies.
  • Promotional payments: cash prize payments for winners.
  • Business payments: small supplier payments, petty cash, and daily wages.
  • Dividend payments for publicly listed companies.
  • Government organizations, NGOs, and FBOs: collect revenue and disburse project, relief, and development funds.

You are required to apply for both Paybill and B2C services first.

Yes. On Business One Account, a Business Web Operator assigned to the Paybill product can disburse funds. However, any disbursement initiated must still be approved by another operator with the Business Manager role.

Yes. All submitted documents must be signed and stamped.

This service is open to all registered entities including SMEs and Micro SMEs.

This is a Bulk Payment number used by organizations to access the M-PESA web system and make payments to consumers.

  • APIs (Application Programming Interface) enable communication and exchange of data between two systems by providing an interface for one system to plug into the other system.
  • With API, an organization does not have to use the M-PESA system directly and can continue to use its in-house system to disburse funds through M-PESA.

The deposit process offers the organization the following advantages:

  • Reduced turnaround time from 3 hours to 1 hour for M-PESA float to be availed in your organization shortcode/business number after deposit.
  • Minimal errors in deposit beneficiary account details, since you are required to enter prefix 333 plus your organization shortcode/business number.

Funds reflect on the Working/MMF Account at different times depending on the channel used:

  • Cash Deposit: Within 1 hour (KCB only).
  • EFT Deposit: Within 48 hours (working days).
  • RTGS Deposit: Within 1 hour.
  • Cheque Deposit: Approximately 3 working days.

There are 2 accounts for B2C payment:

  • MMF/Working Account: This account is where all deposits to the M-PESA Trust Account are paid in and where all withdrawals from the M-PESA bank account are requested. This account does not have direct contact with customer accounts.
  • Utility Account: To make payments to customers, funds must be available in the utility account. The utility account is linked to the customer M-PESA account.

There are two types of B2C payments:

  • B2C individual payment: Used to make payments to one customer at a time.
  • B2C bulk payment: Used to make payments to many customers at the same time using a provided template for validation and payment processing.

Roles are a set of permissions defining what a user can and cannot do in the M-PESA system. B2C payment has 4 roles:

  • Business Administrator: User created by Safaricom. Limited to creating and managing other users. Cannot view, initiate, or approve transactions.
  • Business Web Operator: Can view statements and upload bulk files/initiate transactions. Cannot approve/reject transactions. Can initiate reversals. Cannot withdraw funds from M-PESA.
  • Business Manager: Can view statements, approve uploaded bulk transactions, approve/reject transactions, withdraw funds from M-PESA, and initiate reversals.
  • Business Auditor: Has view/read-only access. Cannot upload/initiate, approve/reject transactions, or withdraw funds.

No. B2C payment follows the maker-checker principle: one user (Business Operator) initiates the transaction and another user (Business Manager) approves it.

You can disburse funds only to Safaricom, Airtel Kenya, or Telkom Kenya subscribers registered on their respective mobile money services such as M-PESA, Airtel Money, and T-Kash.

No. B2C is for payments from businesses to customers mobile phones. Shortcode-to-shortcode payments use B2B (Business to Business) service.

The maximum number is 20,000.

An M-PESA-registered customer can receive up to KSh 150,000 per transaction, subject to the maximum customer account balance of KSh 300,000.

Individuals receive funds up to the available balance, while the rest do not receive funds and the transaction status reads failed.

The organization making the payment can choose to send the exact amount or include the withdrawal charge. Further guidance is in the attached manual.

To know the status of a pending application, click on “My Applications” tab and enter your phone number to receive a unique OTP (PIN) sent via SMS. A list of all applications made by you shall be displayed. Only the applicant can view the status of the application.

The M-PESA Business till is an enhancement of the existing Buy Goods Till that enables business owners to collect payments on the till and use the money collected to make other transactions directly from their till such as:

  • Pay to a mobile number.
  • Pay to another Buy Goods Till.
